Surrender to His Majesty

Surrender. You do not surrender to an inferior power. Your surrender when the opposition proves to be superior in power and ability. That is, if you recognize and acknowledge it. When you don't, you go down in defeat and is some cases destruction. So it is with God. We, in our natural state are enemies of God. We do not acknowledge Him as superior and sovereign over us. Yet, God by the power of His Love for us, moves us to surrender to His majesty. When one surrenders to their enemy here on earth, they usually remain enemies and become their slaves or prisoners with no freedom. However, when we surrender to God, we become not only servants of His majesty, but friends as well. We are free from bondage to sin and free to live for Him.

Worship: I Will Sing of My Redeemer by Phillip Bliss/Fernando Ortega Version; How Majestic is Your Name by Michael W. Smith/Choral Version

I will sing of my Redeemer
And His wondrous love to me;
On the cruel cross he suffered
From the curse to set me free.

Sing, oh sing of my Redeemer
With his blood, he purchased me,
On the cross, he sealed my pardon,
Paid the debt, and made me free.

I will tell the wondrous story
How my lost estate, to save.
In his boundless love and mercy,
He, the ransom freely gave.

Sing, oh sing of my Redeemer
With his blood, he purchased me,
On the cross, he sealed my pardon,
Paid the debt, and made me free.

I will praise my dear Redeemer,
His triumphant power I'll tell,
How the victory he giveth
Over sin, and death, and hell.

Sing, oh sing of my Redeemer
With his blood, he purchased me,
On the cross, he sealed my pardon,
Paid the debt, and made me free.

I will sing of my Redeemer,
And His heav'nly love to me;
He from death to life hath brought me,
Son of God with Him to be.

Sing, oh sing of my Redeemer
With his blood, he purchased me,
On the cross, he sealed my pardon,
Paid the debt, and made me free.

O Lord, our Lord
How majestic is Your name in all the earth.
O Lord, our Lord
How majestic is Your name in all the earth.

O Lord, we praise Your name!
O Lord, we magnify Your name;
Prince of Peace, Mighty God,
O Lord God Almighty

At The Cross"

There's a place where mercy reigns and never dies,
There's a place where streams of grace flow deep and wide.
Where all the love I've ever found,
Comes like a flood,
Comes flowing down.

[Chorus:]
At the cross
At the cross
I surrender my life.
I'm in awe of You
I'm in awe of You
Where Your love ran red
and my sin washed white.
I owe all to You
I owe all to You Jesus.

There's a place where sin and shame are powerless.
Where my heart has peace with God and forgiveness.
Where all the love I've ever found.
Comes like a flood,
Comes flowing down.

[Chorus]

Here my hope is found
Here on holy ground
Here I bow down
Here arms open wide
Here You save my life
Here I bow down
Here I bow down

[Chorus]

Personal: My cold kept me from sleeping well. I’m praying for healing now. Why didn’t I do that before? Waiting on a message from from my friend. My wife messaged me with stock question/statement, “Hope your day went well”. I answered but no reply as of yet. Interesting days, hit and run I call them. Church was good tonight. My daughter Deborah has faithfully come and seems to really be growing in the Lord. I praise God for this!

Word:
Ps 22:25-23:1
25 From you comes my praise in the great congregation;
my vows I will perform before those who fear him.
26 The afflicted shall eat and be satisfied;
those who seek him shall praise the Lord!
May your hearts live forever!

27 All the ends of the earth shall remember
and turn to the Lord,
and all the families of the nations
shall worship before you.
28 For kingship belongs to the Lord,
and he rules over the nations.

29 All the prosperous of the earth eat and worship;
before him shall bow all who go down to the dust,
even the one who could not keep himself alive.
30 Posterity shall serve him;
it shall be told of the Lord to the coming generation;
31 they shall come and proclaim his righteousness to a people yet unborn,
that he has done it. ESV
Ps 22:25-23:1

25 From you comes the theme of my praise in the great assembly; before those who fear you will I fulfill my vows. 26 The poor will eat and be satisfied; they who seek the Lord will praise him — may your hearts live forever! 27 All the ends of the earth will remember and turn to the Lord, and all the families of the nations will bow down before him, 28 for dominion belongs to the Lord and he rules over the nations.

29 All the rich of the earth will feast and worship; all who go down to the dust will kneel before him — those who cannot keep themselves alive. 30 Posterity will serve him; future generations will be told about the Lord. 31 They will proclaim his righteousness to a people yet unborn — for he has done it.
NIV

Psalm:22:27-28
Just how big will this great congregation be? Is it made up only of the afflicted, poor and meek? Not according to these verses. It extends to all “the ends of the earth” and all “the families of the nations”. They are described as doing two things: turning to the Lord (v. 27) and worshiping Him (v. 28). This is partially being fulfilled today as Christ’s church is spreading throughout the world and touching families in all nations everywhere. However, the language here pictures a time when everyone will turn to God and worship (bow down) before Him.

Notice also that this is not only about how great this congregation will be in numbers, but even more about the greatness of our Lord in terms of the extent of His rule. He is said to rule “over all the nations”. How can this be? Because “kingship”(ESV) or “dominion belongs to the Lord”(NIV). Sovereignty is intrinsic to our Lord because of all of who He is. All His attributes merge to make Him “the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords” (1 Tim 6:15 ESV).
The Lord’s people can say with Jeremiah:

“Ah, Sovereign Lord, you have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and outstretched arm. Nothing is too hard for you.”  Jer. 32:17-18 NIV

And confess as Nebuchadnezzar was made to confess:

“…the Most High God is sovereign over the kingdoms of men and sets over them anyone he wishes.” Dan 5:21 NIV (Read Daniel chap. 4)

And one day as Daniel sees in a vision and Psalm 22:27 – 28 envisions:

"In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into his presence. He was given authority, glory and sovereign power; all peoples, nations and men of every language worshiped him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed.” Dan 7:13-14 NIV

This is our hope. This is what we look forward to. But what of today, is God any less Sovereign, is He any less in control? No our God is “same yesterday, today, and forever”. (Heb. 13:8; see also Psalm 102:27-28, Malachi 3:6, James 1:17).
Therefore, He is Sovereign today and deserves the worship that one day will be on the lips and in the hearts of all who dwell on earth.

The word “majesty” is a word in the Bible to describe God’s sovereignty.  J.I. Packer says:

“Our word majesty comes from the Latin; it means greatness. When we ascribe majesty to someone, we are acknowledging greatness in that person, voicing our respect for it: as, for instance, when we speak of “Her Majesty”, the Queen.”1

He goes on to say:

“Now, majesty is a word which the Bible uses to express the thoughts of the greatness of God, our Maker and our Lord. ‘The Lord reigns, he is robed in majesty…. Your throne was established long ago’ (Ps 93:1-2). ‘They will speak of the glorious splendor of your majesty, and I will meditate on your wonderful works’ ( Ps 145:5). Peter, recalling his vision of Christ’s royal glory at the transfiguration, says, ‘We were eyewitnesses of his majesty’ (2 Pet 1:16).2

Other verses converge with these to declare our God’s greatness:
For great is the Lord and most worthy of praise;
he is to be feared above all gods.
For all the gods of the nations are idols,
but the Lord made the heavens.
Splendor and majesty are before him;
strength and joy in his dwelling place.
Ascribe to the Lord, O families of nations,
ascribe to the Lord glory and strength,
ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name. 1 Chron 16:25-29 NIV

Great is the Lord in Zion;
he is exalted over all the nations.
Let them praise your great and awesome name —
he is holy. Ps 99:2-3 NIV

            Great is the Lord and most worthy of praise;
his greatness no one can fathom.
One generation will commend your works to another;
they will tell of your mighty acts.
They will speak of the glorious splendor of your majesty,
and I will meditate on your wonderful works. Ps 145:3-5 NIV

In Ephesians Paul prays we would understand, to the best of our finite minds, the greatness of God’s power which leads to his declaring our Lord Jesus’ sovereignty over all things!

I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is like the working of his mighty strength, which he exerted in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every title that can be given, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way. Eph 1:18-23 NIV

In fact Paul uses an adverb here that tries to describe the indescribable greatness of God’s power. The NIV translates it as “incomparably”. The New American Standard updated has “surpassing” and the original NASB had “exceeding”. The ESV has “immeasurable”. This is no hyperbolic language, even though I suspect that our English word is derived from the same Greek word. The word used here is uperballw (huperballo) which Thayer defines as:
“to transcend, surpass, exceed, excel”. (from Thayer's Greek Lexicon, PC Study Bible formatted Electronic Database. Copyright © 2006 by Biblesoft, Inc. All rights reserved.)

That “immeasurable and unlimited and surpassing greatness of His power”(AMP Version) 3 has seated our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ:

“at his right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every title that can be given, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.”Eph.1:20-22 NIV

This is the knowledge that we are to strive for in order to bring more glory to God and increase our satisfaction and Joy in him. However, this knowledge is often lacking in the Christian today, as J.I. Packer points out:

“But this is knowledge which Christians today largely lack: and that is one reason why our faith is so feeble and our worship so flabby. We are modern people, and modern people, though they cherish great thoughts of themselves, have as a rule small thoughts of God. When the person in the church, let alone the person in the street, uses the word God, the thought is rarely of divine majesty”.4

Furthermore, he points out that:

“Today, vast stress is laid on the thought that God is personal, but this truth is so stated as to leave the impression that God is a person of the same sort as we are—weak, inadequate, ineffective, a little pathetic. But this is not the God of the Bible! Our personal life is a finite thing: it is limited in every direction, in space, in time, in knowledge, in power. But God is not so limited. He is eternal, infinite and almighty. He has us in his hands; we never have him in ours. Like us, he is personal; but unlike us, he is great. In all its constant stress on the reality of God’s personal concern for his people, and on the gentleness, tenderness, sympathy, patience and yearning compassion that he shows towards them, the Bible never lets us lose sight of his majesty and his unlimited dominion over all his creatures.”5

Beware of false teachers who in any way limit our Sovereign God in power or knowledge or wisdom or goodness or love or holiness or presence or majesty or any other attribute that pertains to our glorious Lord.

For certain men whose condemnation was written about long ago have secretly slipped in among you. They are godless men, who change the grace of our God into a license for immorality and deny Jesus Christ our only Sovereign and Lord. Jude 4 NIV

“Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen.” 1 Tim 1:17 NIV

“To him who is able to keep you from falling and to present you before his glorious presence without fault and with great joy— to the only God our Savior be glory, majesty, power and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and forevermore! Amen.” Jude 24-25 NIV

Come and be satisfied!

As you read my blog please don't get caught up in the date. These are mere markers of when I wrote that particular entry, but the content is timeless. By that I mean that the date does not make the message irrelevant anymore than picking up a devotional and reading from the "wrong" day makes that particular reading any less relevant and powerful.

Today it has been a year since my wife left me. A year ago I don't think I could have wrote what I wrote in this particular journal's entry. The Lord had to and still is stripping away all pride, ego, and idolatry in my life till I find my complete satisfaction in Him and Him alone.

Worship:  Feed Me Till I Want No More(Bread Heaven) by Silvana Martins and Jeremy Lee Johnson; Guide Me Thou Great Jehovah by William Williams

'Til I want No More (Bread of Heaven)
written by Silvana Martins and Jeremy Lee Johnson

All who are hungry and weak
come and let the Lord supply.
He brings refreshment complete
only He can satisfy.

Lord, You gave Your body,
Lord, You gave Your blood.

Bread of Heaven, fall down on me
feed me 'til I want no more.
Bread of Heaven, fall down on me
feed me 'til I want no more,
'til I want no more.

Living Streams from above,
heal this dry and thirsty land.
Flowing Spirit of love,
make these dry bones live again.

"Take, this is My body,
drink, this is My blood".

Bread of Heaven, fall down on me
feed me 'til I want no more.
Bread of Heaven, fall down on me
feed me 'til I want no more,
'til I want no more

'Til I want no more, Jesus,
'til I want no more.

"Take, this is My body,
drink, this is My blood"

Bread of Heaven, fall down on me
feed me 'til I want no more.
Living water, pour down on me
quench this thirsting of my soul.
Bread of Heaven, fall down on me
feed me 'til I want no more,
Living water, pour down on me
quench this thirsting of my soul.
'til I want no more.

'Til I want no more, Jesus, Oh Lord,
'till I want no more.

Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah

Guide me, O Thou great Jehovah,
Pilgrim through this barren land.
I am weak, but Thou art mighty;
Hold me with Thy powerful hand.
Bread of heaven, bread of heaven,
Feed me till I want no more;
Feed me till I want no more.

Open now the crystal fountain,
Whence the healing stream doth flow;
Let the fire and cloudy pillar
Lead me all my journey through.
Strong Deliverer, strong Deliverer,
Be Thou still my Strength and Shield;
Be Thou still my Strength and Shield.

Lord, I trust Thy mighty power,
Wondrous are Thy works of old;
Thou deliver'st Thine from thralldom,
Who for naught themselves had sold:
Thou didst conquer, Thou didst conquer,
Sin, and Satan and the grave,
Sin, and Satan and the grave.

When I tread the verge of Jordan,
Bid my anxious fears subside;
Death of deaths, and hell's destruction,
Land me safe on Canaan's side.
Songs of praises, songs of praises,
I will ever give to Thee;
I will ever give to Thee.

Musing on my habitation,
Musing on my heav'nly home,
Fills my soul with holy longings:
Come, my Jesus, quickly come;
Vanity is all I see;
Lord, I long to be with Thee!
Lord, I long to be with Thee!

Personal: Not feeling well today. Head and stomach giving me problems. Pride is also pursuing me constantly. Groping for Your presence Lord, I know You are here only let me feel your presence, fill me with Your Spirit now. Lord never let me think that I am strong. Perhaps what I am feeling now is a reminder that I must rely solely on the Lord. Perhaps He has removed some of His sustaining grace, perhaps this sickness that makes me feel bad is His way of drawing me back to Him and relying on Him alone for my strength and peace and hope!

Word:

Ps 22:25-23:1
5 From you comes my praise in the great congregation;
my vows I will perform before those who fear him.
26 The afflicted shall eat and be satisfied;
those who seek him shall praise the Lord!
May your hearts live forever!

27 All the ends of the earth shall remember
and turn to the Lord,
and all the families of the nations
shall worship before you.
28 For kingship belongs to the Lord,
and he rules over the nations.

29 All the prosperous of the earth eat and worship;
before him shall bow all who go down to the dust,
even the one who could not keep himself alive.
30 Posterity shall serve him;
it shall be told of the Lord to the coming generation;

NIV

Tonight I will finish with verse 26 and move on. Just a simple observation is all I am going to make. First, let me begin with referring back to the songs of worship for today. The first song I worshipped with was a song I found on YouTube while searching for the second song. It has a line in it that is found also in the original version of the second song I worshipped with. Both songs have this line: “fill me ‘til (till) I want no more”. Later versions of Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah change it to “fill now and forever more”. I must admit that when I first heard the words “’till I want no more” I wanted to change them too. After all how could I get to a point where I don’t want any more? Yet, I think there is truth in the original that isn’t found in the revision. A clue to this can be found in the first line of the song 'Til I want No More (Bread of Heaven):

All who are hungry and weak
come and let the Lord supply.
He brings refreshment complete
only He can satisfy.

The truth found in these words is this: only in Christ can we be fully satisfied.  To be filled to the point of wanting no more is to be fully satisfied in Him. Our text says’ “The afflicted shall eat and be satisfied”(ESV).  Our Lord said in Matthew 5:6, “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they will be filled.” (NIV) So here we have a promise that those who come to Him and eat will find full and complete satisfaction. They will declare, as it were, “fill me ‘til I want no more”. That is my desire, my only longing. What about you? What are you hungering and thirsting after? What, or better, who are you seeking to satisfy your longings? Let me give you this invitation:

Isa 55:1-3, 7
"Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost. 2 Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labor on what does not satisfy? Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good, and your soul will delight in the richest of fare. 3 Give ear and come to me; hear me, that your soul may live.
7 Let the wicked forsake his way and the evil man his thoughts. Let him turn to the Lord, and he will have mercy on him, and to our God, for he will freely pardon.
NIV

26 The afflicted shall eat and be satisfied;
those who seek him shall praise the Lord!
May your hearts live forever!

Examine yourselves

Perhaps when you start reading my blog, you see the word Worship and see the songs and say, "okay, just a sight about songs this person likes to sing"; so you move on without scrolling down. But that is not all I have on my blog. If you read my first two blogs you will understand the why and what of what is contained in each blog. So I ask you to read the whole blog before you decide if it's worth reading. Thanks! I would also ask you to lift me up in prayer and if you have a prayer request, feel free to share it with me and I will surely pray for you as well.

Worship: Give them all to Jesus by Evie Tournquist, I Surrender All sung by Brian Luttrell (original words of verses 1 & 2 and refrain by Judson W. Van DeVenter)

Are you tired of chasing pretty rainbows?
Are you tired of spinning round and round?
Wrap up all those shattered dreams of your life
And at the feet of Jesus, lay them down.

Give them all, give them all, give them all to Jesus
Shattered dreams, wounded hearts, and broken toys.
Give them all, give them all, give them all to Jesus
And He will turn your sorrows into joy.

He never said you only see sunshine,
He never said there would be no rain.
He only promised a heart full of singing
About the very thing that once brought pain.

Give them all, give them all, give them all to Jesus
Shattered dreams, wounded hearts, and broken toys.
Give them all, give them all, give them all to Jesus
And He will turn your sorrows into joy.

"I Surrender All"

All to Jesus I surrender
All to Him I freely give
I will ever love and trust Him
In His presence daily live

I surrender all
I surrender all
All to Thee, my blessed Savior
I surrender all

All to Jesus I surrender
Humbly at His feet I bow
Worldly pleasures all forsaken
Take me, Jesus, take me now

I surrender all
I surrender all
All to Thee, my blessed Savior
I surrender all

Lord, I give to You all I ever have
And everything I was and everything I am
Now I lay it down, I lay it at Your feet
To Your grace, to Your power I surrender all

Lord, I give myself to thee
Fill me with Thy love and power
Let Thy blessings fall on me

I surrender all
I surrender all
All to Thee, my blessed Savior
I surrender all

Personal:

Well it’s getting late again, but I did what I should have done from the beginning and that was to have everything ready before I start. I pray that dialogue continues with Rachael and my wife and brings her back to God and her family and me. Glen silent so far, must be busy. Worship was good today. First Give All to Jesus then I surrender all. Lord this is the hardest thing for me, and I’m sure most people, to do. May I every day be a little farther along on the road of surrender. Amen

NIV

“May your hearts live forever!” What a strange and curious phrase. What does it mean? Certainly we can’t take it literally, as if he wished that they would never die. He knew that was the lot of all mankind under the curse of Adam. So what is he trying to say? I believe “heart” here stands for their life itself, not so much the physical but their spiritual life.

 If you compare the various versions you can almost divide them between the older versions and the newer. To illustrate this let me compare the KJV  with the New American Standard. I do this because many will say these are the most literal translations.

KJV: The meek shall eat and be satisfied: they shall praise the LORD that seek him: your heart shall live for ever.

NASB: The afflicted will eat and be satisfied; Those who seek Him will praise the LORD. Let your heart live forever!

Except for the New Living Translation all modern translations translate this more as a blessing or benediction while the older versions translate it as a declarative statement of what happens as a result of coming to Lord and the feast He provides.  Certainly if one comes in sincerity they will live. Therefore, one could speak declaratively in this instance. However, not all who come, come sincerely. We see this even in the eating of the Lord’s Supper in 1 Cor. 11:27-30 where some eat unworthily of the Lord ’s Supper. So, I think the blessing is a more appropriate way to translate this.  Then it contains a promise to those who come sincerely and a warning to those who come with wrong motives. Let all examine ourselves to see which one applies to us!

That is why you should examine yourself before eating the bread and drinking the cup. For if you eat the bread or drink the cup without honoring the body of Christ, you are eating and drinking God's judgment upon yourself. 1 Cor. 11:28-29

An Urgent Invitation

Today's journal entry is an invitation to the believer to rejoice again in the gift of eternal life they have received from the Lord. I have incorporated some classics in the worship portion today. I encourage you to click on the links below each song. Especially enjoy the live versions of Phil Keaggy, a extremely gifted musician and "true Believer"(the tittle to one of his songs). If you have stumbled on this blog, then I urge you to listen and read the whole blog before you reject what is said here. My prayer is that, once hearing and reading that you too will become a "true believer".

Worship: Heaven Came Down & Filled My Soul by John W. Peterson

O what a wonderful, wonderful day - day I will never forget;
After I'd wandered in darkness away, Jesus my Saviour I met.
O what a tender,
compassionate friend - He met the need of my heart;
Shadows dispelling, With joy I am telling, He made all the darkness depart.

Chorus:
Heaven came down and glory filled my soul,
When at the cross the Saviour made me whole;
My sins were washed away -
And my night was turned to day -
Heaven came down and glory filled my soul!

Born of the Spirit with life from above into God's fam'ly divine,
Justified fully thru Calvary's love, O what a standing is mine!
And the transaction so quickly was made when as a sinner I came,
Took of the offer of grace He did proffer - He saved me, O praise His dear name!

Chorus:
Heaven came down and glory filled my soul,
When at the cross the Saviour made me whole;
My sins were washed away -
And my night was turned to day -
Heaven came down and glory filled my soul!

Now I've a hope that will surely endure after the passing of time;
I have a future in heaven for sure, there in those mansions sublime.
And it's because of that wonderful day when at the cross I believed;
Riches eternal and blessings supernal from His precious hand I received.

Chorus:
Heaven came down and glory filled my soul,
When at the cross the Saviour made me whole;
My sins were washed away -
And my night was turned to day -
Heaven came down and glory filled my soul!

Heaven came down and glory filled my soul!

When I get Home I will see all
The holy men I read about.
Peter and John, James, Luke, and Paul
And brother Tom without a doubt.
And I do believe there will be
King David at the harp
A song of praise with every chord.
What a sight to see, the redeemed and
The angels gathered round worshiping the Lord.
What a day that will be
Oh what a day that will be!

When we get Home, our Eternal Home
There'll be no more sick and dying.
No one is sad, no one is alone
And there will be no more crying.
He will wipe away every tear
From His children's eyes
And put a smile upon their faces.
What a happy day when we see
Our Lord in Paradise
Crowned as King of Kings.
What a day that will be
Oh what a day that will be!

What a day, what a day,
What a day that will be..........

Phil wrote this song soon after his mother’s passing in honor of her.

Personal: Another interesting Day. I went to bed very encouraged. 5 things happened really quickly which made me see God’s hand of blessing in it. I thought perhaps then that He would answer my prayer that I had prayed concerning whether I should be more upfront with Pauline in forcing the issue of coming home or not. When I woke up my daughter had texted me about texting mom to tell her God had led her to tell He loved her and she still could come home to work things out. Blessed answer to prayer.
Listening to Phil Keaggy right now; praise God for blessing his life with such talent to share with others!

Word:
Ps 22:25-23:1
5 From you comes my praise in the great congregation;
my vows I will perform before those who fear him.
26  The afflicted shall eat and be satisfied;
those who seek him shall praise the Lord!
May your hearts live forever!

27 All the ends of the earth shall remember
and turn to the Lord,
and all the families of the nations
shall worship before you.
28 For kingship belongs to the Lord,
and he rules over the nations.

29 All the prosperous of the earth eat and worship;
before him shall bow all who go down to the dust,
even the one who could not keep himself alive.
30 Posterity shall serve him;
it shall be told of the Lord to the coming generation;

NIV

Continuing in verse 26 concerning the afflicted or poor or meek, is this not the lot of everyone at sometime in their life? I have a friend who understands this all too well. Having riches and traveling the world, to loosing it all and sinking to the depths of deep depression and being rescued and sitting at the table again. The promise to him and to me and to all who are afflicted is that we will share in the blessings of salvation and be satisfied.

Hear the words of the Lord:

3 "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. 5 Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. 6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. 7 Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. 8 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. 9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God. 10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
11 "Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. 12 Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
Matt 5:3-12 NIV

But we do not eat alone nor should we despise others who seek this same blessing. Hoarding it for ourselves….unwilling to share it with others.

Spurgeon says:

Let us who have sought the Lord praise Him. Let us show our poor friends the seekers the way we sought and we found; let us magnify the Lord at once.
(from The Biblical Illustrator Copyright © 2002, 2003, 2006 Ages Software, Inc. and Biblesoft, Inc.)

Why would we do that? Because of fear? Because of shame? Because of a feeling of inadequacy? They won’t believe me if I tell. They will mock me. I won’t be able to answer their question: why do people suffer?

Maclaren says:

the right use of affliction being to bow men, and they that bow themselves are those who are fit to come to Christ's feast. Men are shut out only because they shut themselves out.(A. Maclaren, D. D.)
from The Biblical Illustrator Copyright © 2002, 2003, 2006 Ages Software, Inc. and Biblesoft, Inc.)

So do not let these things deter you from sharing with others as the Lord leads and always remember this exhortation from scripture (I am speaking to myself chiefly) :

13 Who is going to harm you if you are eager to do good? 14 But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed. "Do not fear what they fear; do not be frightened."  15 But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, 16 keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander.   17 It is better, if it is God's will, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil. 18 For Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. 1 Peter 3:13-18 NIV

Do you (I) remember what it was like when coming to the table for the first time and the joy felt when receiving that great salvation blessing? Do we still rejoice in it and praise Him for it? Surely those who seek and find do not take it for granted or believe that they deserved to be blessed so abundantly, that it was due them because they suffered affliction. But realizing their impoverished estate, their dire predicament, they sought relief and deliverance recognizing they do not deserve it, nor is God required to grant it.

What  is the attitude of the seeker who finds?

Spurgeon writes:

All his seeking, I say, helps him to prize Divine mercy when he receives it, and trains him to praise God according to the promise of our text, "They shall praise the Lord that seek Him." Never is a babe so dear to its mother as when it has just been restored from a sickness which threatened his life; never does a father rejoice over his little child so much as when he has been long lost in the woods, and after a weary search is at last brought home. No gold is so precious to a man as that which he has earned by hard labour and self-denial: the harder he has toiled to gain it, the more rejoiced is he when at length he has enough to permit him to rest. No freedom is so precious as the new found liberty of a slave, no enlargement so joyous as that of one who has long been sitting in the valley of the shadow of death bound in affliction and iron. No return to a country is so full of delight as that of sorrowful exiles who come back from cruel Babylon, by whose waters they sat and wept, yea, wept when they remembered Zion.
(from The Biblical Illustrator Copyright © 2002, 2003, 2006 Ages Software, Inc. and Biblesoft, Inc.)

And what is their response?

Again Spurgeon writes:

Psalms 22:26
As a bird lies hidden among the heather, but is seen when at last it is startled and made to take to the wing, so doth praise take to the wing and display itself when at last those who seek the Lord are permitted to find Him. What thunderclaps of praise come from poor sinners when they have just found their all in all in God in the person, of Christ Jesus. Then their joy becomes almost too much for them to hold, vastly too much for them to express. Oh, the praises, the day and night praises, the continuous praises, which rise from the returning, repenting soul which has at last felt the Father's arms around its neck and the Father swarm kisses on its cheek, and is sitting down at the table where the happy household eat and drink and are merry. Praising time has come indeed when finding time has arrived. Happy day! Happy day! when we meet with God in Jesus Christ.
(from The Biblical Illustrator Copyright © 2002, 2003, 2006 Ages Software, Inc. and Biblesoft, Inc.)

For all who have not come, remember the words in Revelation 22:12-17 shared two days ago and now hear also these words of exhortation and warning:

Isa 55:6-7

6 Seek the Lord while he may be found;
call on him while he is near.
7 Let the wicked forsake his way
and the evil man his thoughts.
Let him turn to the Lord, and he will have mercy on him,
and to our God, for he will freely pardon.
NIV

And again:

2 Cor 6:1-2
As God's fellow workers we urge you not to receive God's grace in vain.  For he says,

"In the time of my favor I heard you,
and in the day of salvation I helped you."

I tell you, now is the time of God's favor, now is the day of salvation.
NIV

But heed this warning:

Heb 3:7-19

7 So, as the Holy Spirit says:
"Today, if you hear his voice, 8 do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion, during the time of testing in the desert, 9 where your fathers tested and tried me and for forty years saw what I did. 10 That is why I was angry with that generation, and I said, 'Their hearts are always going astray, and they have not known my ways.' 11 So I declared on oath in my anger, ‘They shall never enter my rest.'"
12 See to it, brothers, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God. 13 But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called Today, so that none of you may be hardened by sin's deceitfulness. 14 We have come to share in Christ if we hold firmly till the end the confidence we had at first. 15 As has just been said:
"Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion."
16 Who were they who heard and rebelled? Were they not all those Moses led out of Egypt? 17 And with whom was he angry for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies fell in the desert? 18 And to whom did God swear that they would never enter his rest if not to those who disobeyed?  19 So we see that they were not able to enter, because of their unbelief.
NIV

May God’s invitation penetrate your heart today and may you seek and find the Savior who only can satisfy your longings and give you true peace and joy and salvation!

Praising amidst "Life"

This morning, as I drove home from work, my spirit matched the frost etched on my car windows. It has been almost a year since my wife left me. A song on the radio reminded me that God was all I needed. I conceded that truth to Him but asked if it was not wrong to need the companionship of my wife, temporary as it is in this life. I "reminded " Him that it was not His will for a marriage to be dissolved by anyone while here on earth. Tears flowed as I cried out to the Lord.  A song came over the radio that caught my attention. The words may not appear to relate to my situation yet I found them to be very comforting at the time. Perhaps as time passes, I will realize how they do. Here is a portion of the words to the song.

We believe Your love is the strongest way
You’re tearing down walls and You break our chains
Even in this darkness hope will rise again
When we lay down our weapons we will let love win
We believe Your love is the strongest way
You’re tearing down walls and You break our chains
Even in this darkness hope will rise again
When we lay down our weapons we will let love win
Lord we lay down our weapons and we let love win

Worship: Nearer My God to Thee by Sarah F. Adams; Come into His Presence by Paul Clark

Nearer, My God, To Thee

Nearer, my God, to Thee, nearer to Thee!

E'en though it be a cross that raiseth me,

Still all my song shall be, nearer, my God, to Thee.

Refrain

Nearer, my God, to Thee,

Nearer to Thee!

Though like the wanderer, the sun gone down,

Darkness be over me, my rest a stone.

Yet in my dreams I'd be nearer, my God to Thee.

Refrain

There let the way appear, steps unto heav'n;

All that Thou sendest me, in mercy given;

Angels to beckon me nearer, my God, to Thee.

Refrain

Then, with my waking thoughts bright with Thy praise,

Out of my stony griefs Bethel I'll raise;

So by my woes to be nearer, my God, to Thee.

Refrain

Or, if on joyful wing cleaving the sky,

Sun, moon, and stars forgot, upward I'll fly,

Still all my song shall be, nearer, my God, to Thee.

Refrain

There in my Father's home, safe and at rest,

There in my Savior's love, perfectly blest;

Age after age to be, nearer my God to Thee.

I remembered the song below from the seventies but thought Love Song had done it. It had some of that same sound. Phil Keaggy’s guitar rifts still give me chills on this song, and they lift me, as it were, “into His presence!”

Come into His Presence

Here’s good news to you who are plagued with sin
And to all of you who find it hard to enter in
Jesus died with his arms stretched out on a tree
And they’re still stretching out because they’re reaching for you and me

Won’t you, Come into his presence
His blood shed for you is the evidence
That He wants us, to come and have fellowship and be free

So now that we can come boldly before his throne
By and new and living way which he did all alone
Let us draw near with assurance that it’s done
With our hearts sprinkled clean and with our bodies cleansed by the Son

Let us, come into his presence
His blood shed for you is the evidence
And He wants us, to come and have fellowship and be free.

Won’t you, Come into his presence
His blood shed for you is the evidence
That He wants us, to come and have fellowship and be free
come and have fellowship and be free
come and have fellowship and be free
come and have fellowship and be free

Won’t you please come?

Personal: Well here I am in the same circumstances as usual. I got up late because my phone died and there was no alarm. Missed a store meeting I never read about. No word from my wife or my close friend. Good news this morning though. Another friend, and brother, has started a life group. Another friend has shared with me some prayer requests. I’m alive and praising amidst the rush.

Word:

Ps 22:25-23:1
5 From you comes my praise in the great congregation;
my vows I will perform before those who fear him.
26  The afflicted shall eat and be satisfied;
those who seek him shall praise the Lord!

even the one who could not keep himself alive.
30 Posterity shall serve him;
it shall be told of the Lord to the coming generation;

NIV

Just a few more observations and I will be finished with the Psalm –that is – for now.

As I see it, there a few different groups of people seen here each described in some way by the words that follow close after them.

The first group is the “afflicted”(NIV 1984) or “poor”(NIV 2011) or “meek”(KJV). A group described by our Lord as “blessed” (Matt. 5:3, 5). I believe what follows is still a description of them, which is:

they who seek the Lord will praise him — may your hearts live forever!

When the peace offering referred to in verse 25 was made, a portion was kept for the worshiper to eat and with all those he wished to share. Here David and ultimately, our Lord share their sacrifice with the afflicted or needy. Does this not, in a sense, fulfill the beatitudes concerning the poor and the meek? Will they not be satisfied? And will not those who “hunger and thirst after righteousness” be “filled”? (Matt. 5:6)

Time’s up for now. To be continued tomorrow, Lord willing.

What will you do?

Worship: To God Be the Glory by Fannie Crosby; Shout to Lord by Darlene Zschech

To God Be the Glory

To God be the glory, great things He has done;
So loved He the world that He gave us His Son,
Who yielded His life an atonement for sin,
And opened the life gate that all may go in.

Refrain
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,
Let the earth hear His voice!
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,
Let the people rejoice!
O come to the Father, through Jesus the Son,
And give Him the glory, great things He has done.

O perfect redemption, the purchase of blood,
To every believer the promise of God;
The vilest offender who truly believes,
That moment from Jesus, a pardon receives.

Refrain

Great things He has taught us, great things He has done,
And great our rejoicing through Jesus the Son;
But purer, and higher, and greater will be
Our wonder, our transport, when Jesus we see.

Refrain

"Shout To The Lord"

My Jesus, my Savior,
Lord, there is none like You;
All of my days
I want to praise
The wonders of Your mighty love.

My comfort, my shelter,
Tower of refuge and strength;
Let every breath, all that I am
Never cease to worship You.

Shout to the Lord, all the earth,
Let us sing
Power and majesty, praise to the (King);
Mountains bow down (mountains bow down) and the seas will roar
At the sound of Your name.

I sing for joy at the work of Your hands,
Forever I'll love You, forever I'll stand,
Nothing compares to the promise I have in You.

My Jesus, my Savior,
Oh, Lord there is nothing like You;
All of my days
I want to praise
The wonders of Your mighty love.

You're my comfort (my comfort), and my shelter, yes (my shelter),
You're my tower of refuge and strength;
Let every breath, and all that I am
Never cease to worship You.

Shout to the Lord, all the earth,
Let us sing
Power and majesty, praise to the King;
Mountains bow down and the seas will roar
At the sound of Your name.

I sing for joy at the work of Your hands,
Forever I'll love You, forever I'll stand,
Nothing compares to the promise I have in...

Shout to the Lord, all the earth,
Let us sing, yeah,
Power and majesty, praise to the King;
Mountains bow down (mountains bow down and the seas will roar)
At the sound of Your name.

I sing for joy at the work of Your hands,
Forever I'll love You, forever I'll stand,
Nothing compares to the promise I have in You...
(Nothing compares to the promise I have in You...)
Oh, nothing compares to the promise I have in you.

Personal: Another day where I did not get as far as I wanted. Neglected to do things I wanted to do, such as call my kids about things going on in their lives, and sending out a check to a friend for a book he wrote. I just spent time fixing the slice I put in a copper pipe behind my washer when I was trying to find where the leak was coming from when I did my wash. Instead, I made another leak. I also spent a lot of money today for a hospital bill for my wife, shoes for me, and for dinner with my daughter, her husband, and my grandkids. I wasted time on e-mails, and I could not come up with a second praise song for a while. So here I am, almost at the end of the day, feeling rattled and not relaxed. Lord calm my spirit and fill me with Your Spirit as I enter into Your Word. Amen!

Word:

Ps 22:25-23:1
25 From you comes my praise in the great congregation;
my vows I will perform before those who fear him.
26  The afflicted shall eat and be satisfied;
those who seek him shall praise the Lord!

NIV

I have struggled with these verses, I confess. I have spent hours poring over commentaries. Some were helpful, and others leaving much to be desired. Perhaps they struggled too. The problem is that each comes to these passages with a particular eschatological framework in place, as well as certain theological assumptions. I will try to avoid these as best as possible, but it is impossible to avoid them entirely.

Let me begin by observing, as others have, that this psalm begins in the darkness of despair with cries of anguish from one individual. However, it ends in bright glory with praise and worship and proclamation on the lips of many. The crowd of both Jew and Gentile (mortal enemies at this time) that surrounded and mocked our Lord gives way to a vast congregation (Jew and Gentile as one in the Church). These will magnify Yahweh(vs.26-27) and declare the righteousness of Adonai(Vs. 30-31).

Notice the multitude of wills that follows the “will I” of verse 25. There we saw our Lord praising His Father before His followers. There it is said: “before those who fear you will I fulfill my vows” NIV.

From His will flows all the wills that follow.

1.     “The poor will eat and be satisfied”-v. 26a
2.     Those “who seek the LORD will praise him”-v. 26b
3.     “All the ends of the earth will remember and turn to the LORD”-v. 27a
4.     “all the families of the nations will bow down before him”-v. 27b
5.     “All the rich of the earth will feast and worship”-v. 29a
6.     “all who go down to the dust will kneel before him”-v. 29b
7.     “Posterity will serve him”-v. 30a
8.     “future generations will be told about the Lord”-v.30b
9.     “They will proclaim his righteousness to a people yet unborn”-v. 31a

Yesterday has disappeared into today. Time moves forth to the fourth hour of the morn. There are a few more things I want to touch on, but time and weariness forbade me from going on now. How shall I close this portion of devotions? Perhaps with a question: In light of what Christ has done, is doing and will do. In light of what the faithful followers have done, are doing, and will do. What will I do? What will you do? I pray that we will do as the song I just heard said:

Where You go, I go
What You say I say
What You pray I pray
(From Where You Go I Go by Jesus Culture)

To those who have not given their hearts to follow Him where He goes hear this warning and invitation:

“12 "Behold, I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to everyone according to what he has done. 13 I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.

14 "Blessed are those who wash their robes, that they may have the right to the tree of life and may go through the gates into the city. 15 Outside are the dogs, those who practice magic arts, the sexually immoral, the murderers, the idolaters and everyone who loves and practices falsehood.

16 "I, Jesus, have sent my angel to give you this testimony for the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, and the bright Morning Star."

 17 The Spirit and the bride say, "Come!" And let him who hears say, "Come!" Whoever is thirsty, let him come; and whoever wishes, let him take the free gift of the water of life.
Revelation 22:12-17 NIV

Come, now is the time to worship.
Come, now is the time to give your heart.
Come, just as you are, to worship.
Come, just as you are, before your God.
Come.

One day every tongue will confess
You are God.
One day every knee will bow.
Still the greatest treasure remains for those
Who gladly choose you now.
(From Come, Now Is The Time To Worship by Phillips, Craig, and Dean)

As for me, whether in good times or bad, when others fall away by exceeding abundant afflictions or blessings, may this be my prayer and testimony:

"Bring The Rain"

I can count a million times
People asking me how I
Can praise You with all that I've gone through

The question just amazes me
Can circumstances possibly
Change who I forever am in You

Maybe since my life was changed
Long before these rainy days
It's never really ever crossed my mind

To turn my back on You, oh Lord
My only shelter from the storm
But instead I draw closer through these times

So I pray
Bring me joy, bring me peace
Bring the chance to be free
Bring me anything that brings You glory

And I know there'll be days
When this life brings me pain
But if that's what it takes to praise You
Jesus, bring the rain

I am yours regardless of
The clouds that may loom above
Because You are much greater than my pain

You who made a way for me
By suffering Your destiny
So tell me what’s a little rain

So I pray
Bring me joy, bring me peace
Bring the chance to be free
Bring me anything that brings you glory

And I know there'll be days
When this life brings me pain
But if that's what it takes to praise You
Jesus, bring the rain

Holy, holy, holy, holy, holy, holy
Is the Lord God Almighty
Is the Lord God Almighty

And I forever sing
Holy, holy, holy, holy, holy, holy
Is the Lord God Almighty
Is the Lord God Almighty

Everybody sing it
Holy, holy, holy, holy, holy, holy
Is the Lord God Almighty
Is the Lord God Almighty

You are holy; You are holy
Lord, You are holy
Is the Lord our God
Is the Lord our God Almighty

Everybody sing it
Holy, You are holy
Oh, holy, holy, holy
Is the Lord God Almighty
Is the Lord God Almighty

Holy, holy, holy, holy, holy, holy
Is the Lord God Almighty
Is the Lord God Almighty
