God's might draws the limits to man's might,

February 15, 2016

Worship:  Lord Strong and Mighty by Ben Cantelon;

Your voice has power to calm raging seas
Even death can't hold You down
The sound of Your great name
Commands the darkness to flee
Our God has the victory

You alone stand above it all
You're the Lord strong and mighty
Jesus You the center of it all
Our God is strong and mighty

Nations rise and fall You're unshakable
You're the everlasting light
All creation cries 'make way for the risen King'
Yes our God has the victory

You alone stand above it all
You're the Lord strong and mighty
Jesus You the center of it all
Our God is strong and mighty

Forevermore You'll be enthroned in Glory
Our praise will rise and
magnify the risen King
(x2)

You alone stand above it all
You're the Lord strong and mighty
Jesus You the center of it all
Our God is strong and mighty

Letting go of every single dream
I lay each one down at Your feet
Every moment of my wandering
Never changes what You see

I've tried to win this war I confess
My hands are weary I need Your rest
Mighty Warrior, King of the fight
No matter what I face, You're by my side

When You don't move the mountains I'm needing You to move
When You don't part the waters I wish I could walk through
When You don't give the answers as I cry out to You
I will trust, I will trust, I will trust in You!

Truth is, You know what tomorrow brings
There's not a day ahead You have not seen
So, in all things be my life and breath
I want what You want Lord and nothing less

When You don't move the mountains I'm needing You to move
When You don't part the waters I wish I could walk through
When You don't give the answers as I cry out to You
I will trust, I will trust, I will trust in You!

You are my strength and comfort
You are my steady hand
You are my firm foundation; the rock on which I stand

Your ways are always higher
Your plans are always good
There's not a place where I'll go, You've not already stood

When You don't move the mountains I'm needing You to move
When You don't part the waters I wish I could walk through
When You don't give the answers as I cry out to You
I will trust, I will trust, I will trust in You!

I will trust in You!

Witness:
Today was a struggling day. It began with a very restless sleep. A sleep interrupted by bad dreams. Even one where someone pulled out an Uzi and shot at me. I was in and out of sleep. My last few hours in bed were spent in looking at my phone and listening to sermons by Alistair Begg and John Piper. When I got up I was energetic but lost power as the day proceeded. I finally crashed for a few hours on the couch listening to the TV and all the ungodly chatter going on in this election cycle. I pray for a godly leader to lead us but know that God may continue to judge this nation who has been slowly (and now more rapidly) removed God from having any influence on the thoughts and actions of the citizens of the United States. “In God, we trust”  no longer has meaning to many or at least not the God of the Bible.
Depressed by this and my present circumstances, tired and weak; I kneeled to pray and confess my thoughts and feelings to the One who already knows what I am thinking and feeling. I cried out to Him concerning how I felt about the seemingly long time that has passed, and my prayers for my wife and my family have not been answered. I then proceeded to my computer to begin to search for a song to worship with. I first searched for a song with the words “strong and mighty”. I confess I my search took longer than I expected. I finally settled on the first song listed above. When I finished, I continued for a while looking for more songs. I was going to include the most well-known classic song on this verse but decided to leave that song until the end of my study and meditation on this Psalm. I finally gave up and decided that I would continue on in my journaling. My spirit was still despondent and I wondered what I could say in this portion. It was then that a song came to my mind. It was a song by Lauren Daigle that I heard on the radio recently and had downloaded on my phone through Spotify. It was the song I will Trust in You (which ironically(?) is playing again as I write this very sentence!).  I remembered some of the words to the song and I thought it would be a good song to encourage me while I was in this melancholic state. Little did I know how this song would coalesce my mood, the thoughts on this nation, and this psalm into one relevant topic for this portion of my journal. How is that, you ask?  I was feeling depressed, but the song calls me to trust in Him, even when things don’t go my way. This nation’s motto is only given lip service, for many have turned their back on God. The song calls them back to trust in the One who shed His grace on them. As for how it relates to this Psalm, let these words from the song be mine and this nation’s confession and profession:
I've tried to win this war I confess
My hands are weary I need Your rest
Mighty Warrior, King of the fight
No matter what I face, You're by my side

I.        Who is the King of glory? -  v. 8
A.     The LORD strong and mighty
B.      The LORD mighty in Battle

II.   Who is He, this King of glory? – v. 10
A.     The LORD Almighty or Hosts
B.      He is the King of Glory

Yesterday I looked the word “strong” and how it related to the strength found in an army. I referred to God as an “army of one”, who needed no one to fight His battles, but on earth, He often used armies to fight His battles. One day He will return with His heavenly hosts or army and destroy His enemies (I am purposefully not going into detail here so as to not get distracted by the various millennial views held by sincere Bible believing followers). The servant of Elisha saw a glimpse of this heavenly army in 2 Kings 6:17.
And Elisha prayed, "O Lord, open his eyes so he may see." Then the Lord opened the servant's eyes, and he looked and saw the hills full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha. 2 Kings 6:17 NIV
And was it the sound of the heavenly host marching that David heard in 2 Samuel 5:24?
Today I look at the word “mighty”.

According to Strong’s the word means:

OT:1368
gibbowr (ghib-bore'); or (shortened) gibbor (ghib-bore'); intensive from the same as OT:1397; powerful; by implication, warrior, tyrant

BDB:

OT:1368 gibbowr or (shortened) gibbor —
as an adjective:
1)           strong, mighty

as a noun, masculine:
            2)        a strong man, a brave man, a mighty man

Vines:
            Noun
OT:1368
gibbor OT:1368, "hero." This word appears 159 times in the Old Testament. The first occurrence of gibbor is in Gen 6:4: "There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown."
In the context of battle, the word is better understood to refer to the category of warriors. The gibbor is the proven warrior; especially is this true when gibbor is used in combination with chayil ("strength").

            Adjective
            OT:1368
gibbor OT:1368, "strong." Gibbor may be translated by the adjective "strong" in the following contexts: a "strong" man 1 Sam 14:52, a "strong" lion Prov 30:30, a mighty hunter Gen 10:9, and the mighty ones Gen 6:1-4.
(from Vine's Expository Dictionary of Biblical Words, Copyright © 1985, Thomas Nelson Publishers.)
So we see from this word study that the word often, if not more often refers to a warrior who is strong and mighty. Vines adds the insight that it refers to the “proven warrior”.
The TWOT has this to say about this:
The Hebrew root is commonly associated with warfare and has to do with the strength and vitality of the successful warrior.

It further elaborates:
It is not surprising that in such a society God was often depicted as a warrior. God is the true prototype of the mighty man, and if an earthly warrior's deeds are recounted, how much more should God's be. Thus the psalmists recount God's mighty acts (Ps 106:8; Ps 145:4,11,12; etc.) and in various places those attributes which a warrior-king might be expected to possess-wisdom, might, counsel and understanding-are attributed
par excellence
to God (Job 12:13; Prov 8:14). Isaiah (Isa 9:6; cf. Isa 10:21) indicates that these will be the attributes of the Coming King, whose name is the Mighty God as well as the Prince of Peace, but he also makes it plain that justice and righteousness will accompany his might (cf. Ps 89:14-15).

Falling asleep so let me finish with this thought from TWOT that echoes and expands on a comment I made in yesterday’s journal entry.
God's might draws the limits to man's might, for man's prowess is to be gloried in just so long as it does not overstep itself. When man sees his might as all he needs for successful living, he is deluded (Ps 33:16; Ps 90:10; Eccl 9:11). When he, in the arrogance of his strength, pits himself against the Warrior-God, he will be destroyed (Ps 52; Jer 9:22; Jer 46:5; etc.). Rather might must be tempered with wisdom (1 Sam 2:9; Prov 16:32; Prov 21:22) and the greatest wisdom of all is to trust God. Thus it is said that he is a
geber
(a male at the height of his powers) who trusts God (Ps 40:5). The man possessed of might who yet distrusts his own powers and instead trusts those of God is most truly entitled to the appellation "man" (Job 38:3; Jer 17:7; Mic 3:8). This is the "new man" of Paul, for he will have discovered that although transgressions have prevailed over him (Ps 65:4), the Lord's mercy will prevail over them (Ps 103:11) and that the Lord is indeed "mighty to save" (Ps 80:3 ).

I know many who read this will not believe that God has put His “Amen” at the end of what I have written. Yet I believe He has. I am not making this up, for you see as I pasted this last quote and read the last words of the quote, Laura Story was singing her song “Mighty to Save”!

You're my savior
You can move the mountains
God, You are Mighty to save
You are Mighty to save
Forever
Author of salvation
You rose and conquered the grave
Yes, You conquered the grave
You are Mighty to save...
http://www.lyricsmode.com/lyrics/l/laura_story/mighty_to_save.html

And these words come from her song I Can Just Be Me:

So be my father, my mighty warrior, be my king.
Cause I can be scattered, frail and shattered,
Lord I need You now to be,
Be my God, so I can just be me.
