When we live in His presence, we live in His protection

As you can see I am a little late in getting my Valentine's Day Blog out. However, I look at this way - better than 3 days than a week, or two, or a month like it has been lately. God has strengthened me to write more without having to lay down to nap before I go to work. I am still tired but praise God I am still writing! #God is Good! #He's good even if I don't write #To Him be all the glory and praise now and forever. Amen (Romans 11:33-36; 1 Peter 4:10-11)

Worship:  Jesus Only Jesus by Matt Redman

Who has the power to raise the dead?
Who can save us from our sin?
He is our hope, our righteousness
Jesus, only Jesus

Who can make the blind to see?
Who holds the keys that set us free?
He paid it all to bring us peace
Jesus, only Jesus

Holy, King almighty Lord
Saints and angels all adore
I join with them and bow before
Jesus, only Jesus

Who can command the highest praise?
Who has the name above all names?
You stand alone, I stand amazed
Jesus, only Jesus

Holy, King almighty Lord
Saints and angels all adore
I join with them and bow before
Jesus, only Jesus

You will command the highest praise!
Yours is the name above all names!
You stand alone, I stand amazed
Jesus, only Jesus!
Jesus, only Jesus!

Holy, King almighty Lord
Saints and angels all adore
I join with them and bow before
Jesus, only Jesus

You will command the highest praise
Yours is the name above all names
You stand alone, I stand amazed
Jesus, only Jesus

Jesus, only Jesus
There’s no other
Jesus, only Jesus

Witness:

The greatest valentine message was not contained in a card but on a cross.

That message is written on our hearts when we receive it and believe it.

We then are God’s messengers – God’s letter containing this Valentine message for all to see.

… known and read by everybody. 2 Cor. 3:2 c

WORD:

Ps 27:4-6

4 One thing I ask of the Lord,
this is what I seek:
that I may dwell in the house of the Lord
all the days of my life,
to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord
and to seek him in his temple.
5 For in the day of trouble
he will keep me safe in his dwelling;
he will hide me in the shelter of his tabernacle
and set me high upon a rock.
6 Then my head will be exalted
above the enemies who surround me;
at his tabernacle will I sacrifice with shouts of joy;
I will sing and make music to the Lord.
NIV (84)
Ps 27:4-6

4 The one thing I ask of the Lord—
the thing I seek most—
is to live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life,
delighting in the Lord's perfections
and meditating in his Temple.
5 For he will conceal me there when troubles come;
he will hide me in his sanctuary.
He will place me out of reach on a high rock.
6 Then I will hold my head high
above my enemies who surround me.
At his sanctuary I will offer sacrifices with shouts of joy,
singing and praising the Lord with music.

Ps 27:4-6

4 One thing have I desired of the Lord, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord, and to inquire in his temple.

5 For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his pavilion: in the secret of his tabernacle shall he hide me; he shall set me up upon a rock.

6 And now shall mine head be lifted up above mine enemies round about me: therefore will I offer in his tabernacle sacrifices of joy; I will sing, yea, I will sing praises unto the Lord.
KJV
Ps 27:4-6

4  One thing have I asked of the Lord,
that will I seek after:
that I may dwell in the house of the Lord
all the days of my life,
to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord
and to inquire in his temple.

5 For he will hide me in his shelter
in the day of trouble;
he will conceal me under the cover of his tent;
he will lift me high upon a rock.

6 And now my head shall be lifted up
above my enemies all around me,
and I will offer in his tent
sacrifices with shouts of joy;
 I will sing and make melody to the Lord.
ESV

1.     Presence – David earnestly desired to personally experience God’s presence – v. 4
2.     Protection – Which led to experiencing God’s protection – vs. 5
3.     Promotion – And experiencing exaltation – v. 6
4.     Praise – And culminating in God’s praise – v. 6

One of the benefits of being in God’s presence is the protection it affords the believer. Swiftly on the heels of verse 4 comes verse 5 and David’s confidence in the Lord’s preservative power in precarious times. We are not to infer that this is the motive behind David’s desire -  which one might erroneously conclude from the use of the conjunction “For.” David is not saying, “I desire God’s presence in order to be protected from trouble.” Rather, he is saying, “Because I am in God’s presence I am protected in troubled times.” The first assertion would be idolatry and superstition – “The Lord is my lucky rabbit’s foot or plastic Jesus on my dashboard protecting me.” The second assertion is a humble acknowledgment of God’s omnipotence and omnipresence as touching my life.

This is easier said than believed. And in practice, we often seek God’s protection and not His presence. Peter was in the very presence of the Lord on the water, but he sank because he doubted. And when the Lord spreads a table in the presence of our enemies how often do we not enjoy the meal because of the indigestion caused by fear of the surrounding enemy. Perhaps worse than doubt (for in doubt there is still an element of belief) is indifference. We live as if God isn’t necessary or needed except in days of trouble and only then do we come to the Lord and expect protection despite the fact that we are living a “presence-less” life. Like a child who only calls or visits when they need something.

Note David’s confidence in verse 5. There is a threefold declaration of God’ protection demonstrated by the confident phrase “He will.”

·        He will hide me
·        He will conceal me
·        He will lift me up

When we live in His presence, we live in His protection. If we are hurt or harmed as a result of troubles, we are still in His presence and protection and know there is a purpose that will result in His glory and our good (Rom. 8:28-39; 2 Timothy 4:18). And if we die, we will only experience an intensification of His presence!
