An Urgent Call to Confessional Prayer

More than a month has passed again. I intend to be more intentional in writing and posting my blog/journal. However, I am less able to do this with my new work schedule and the stress accompanying it. My sleep is interrupted, and I often wake up several times during the day (I work the night shift). So, I find myself taking a nap after dinner before I go to work. Needless to say, I don't get much done during the week and cram most chores onto my weekends. This includes my blog. Please pray that I can sleep better and not be distracted by other things (like politics). Thanks to all who read my blog (all the few who do 😄).

Verse 6

Therefore let all the faithful pray to you while you may be found; surely the rising of the mighty waters will not reach them.

NIV

Ps 32:6

6 For this shall every one that is godly pray unto thee in a time when thou mayest be found: surely in the floods of great waters they shall not come nigh unto him.

KJV

Therefore let everyone who is godly offer prayer to you at a time when you may be found; surely in the rush of great waters, they shall not reach him.

ESV

Ps 32:6

6 Therefore, let all the godly pray to you while there is still time,

that they may not drown in the floodwaters of judgment.

Worship in Word:

IV. Call/Seek – v. 6

We have been transported from the valley to the heights in verses verses 1-5 of Psalm 32. Yes, the psalmist began the psalm at the top of the mountain, but we learn that he hadn't started there. He had begun in the valley (vs. 3-4). He only attained the heights by God's grace and mercy after repentance and confession (v. 5).

Having gone from down in the depths of sin and silence up into the heights of confession, forgiveness, and blessedness, David looked outward. Did he see others down in the valley struggling with unconfessed sin? Did he hear the groans escaping from lips parched by the relentless heat of conviction? Did he shudder as he remembered the crushing weight of guilt he experienced as he viewed the valley dwellers bowed under the same pressing hand of God? And in alarm, did he see the approaching waters of judgment rushing towards them?

So David cried out, "let everyone who is godly pray to You (v. 6b NASU95)." His voice is urgent, "in a time when You may be found (v. 6a NASU95). The NLT captures this urgency: "while there is still time (NLT 2015). God is very patient, but there will come a time when the time of deliverance will end, and His judgment will ensue. The time for repentance and confession is now!

Therefore let everyone who is faithful pray to you immediately.

Christian Standard Bible (Ps 32:6). (2020). Holman Bible Publishers.

The day will come when judgment will fall upon unconfessed sin, and in that day the Saviour will not be found to make our confession to. We must indeed seek the Lord while He may be found

Hindson, E. E., & Kroll, W. M., eds. (1994). KJV Bible Commentary (p. 1020). Thomas Nelson.

He is confident ("surely" NIV) from his own experience that judgment will be averted for all who pray, acknowledging their sin.

When great floodwaters come, they will not reach him.

Christian Standard Bible (Ps 32:6). (2020). Holman Bible Publishers.").

Because he knows what it is to be forgiven, because he knows what it is to be without guile, he can pray with glad, happy assurance and know that the Lord will protect him in every time of trial.

(from Ironside Commentaries, PC Study Bible formatted electronic database Copyright © 2012 by Biblesoft, Inc. All rights reserved.)

Floods are often used metaphorically for a time of judgment.

Judah's leaders are like those

who move boundary stones.

I will pour out my wrath on them

like a flood of water.

Hos 5:10 NIV

Hence, the NLT says: "that they may not drown in the floodwaters of judgment." (v. 6)

The godly will recall when God used a flood in judgment, such as the Noahic flood of Genesis chapters 6-8.

The person, who in faith prays to the LORD, will find him, and knows that he keeps his children safe, even when the mighty waters look like overwhelming them. There may be an allusion here back to the flood in Noah's day

Harman, A. (2011). Psalms: A Mentor Commentary (Vols. 1–2, pp. 277–278). Mentor.

Thus, verse 6 contains an urgent call to confessional prayer, a promise to those who do, and a warning (by implication) to those who won't.

When the heart is softened and the conscience alarmed, that is a time of finding. God is ever ready; men are not so. Who can pray with a hard heart and a dark mind? While you feel relentings, pray.

Worship in Witness:

As I sit here today, waiting for one of my grandchildren to get off work, I am struck with the thought: "Is there any concern for one's standing before a holy God?" A holy God who also desires to forgive our sins and cleanse our conscience from guilt? Who brings joy to the hearts of the saints whose sins have been covered by the blood of Jesus, our Savior and Lord? Oh, what Love is this!

Eph 2:4-5

4 But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, 5 made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions — it is by grace you have been saved.

NIV

Rom 5:8-11

8 but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. 9 Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God. 10 For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life. 11 More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.

ESV

Transcendent wonder and a vertical relationship with this God of Holy Love have been replaced with a utilitarian view of God or religion. A god who serves my needs and makes me happy by my own standards. Sin is belittled or redefined. Yes, "God is Love," but a love that is watered down and tolerant of any lifestyle. Love as the world defines it and not as God defines it. Unfortunately, this "tolerance" has infected the church, and many have fallen for the lies of the "world, the flesh, and the devil."

However, the Apostle John, who spoke of God's love:

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

John 3:16 NIV

And reminds believers of this great love by which they have become His children:

See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him.

1 John 3:1 TNIV

Also says this:

2 Beloved, we are God's children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is. 3 And everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure.

1 John 3:2-3 ESV

Those who have genuinely repented of their sins and placed their faith and hope in Christ alone as their Lord and Savior are the children of God. And as His children, we are to imitate our Heavenly Father. And this is done when we follow Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, His Son, through the power of the Holy Spirit who dwells in us.

1 Follow God's example, therefore, as dearly loved children  2 and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.

Eph 5:1-2 TNIV

Imperfect, yet forgiven and growing into the likeness of God's Son (Rom. 8:28-30; 2 Cor. 3:18). These are the "godly" (ESV) or "faithful" who pray when sin does beset them.

See

Father,

May I see things as You see them.

May I obey Your precepts and believe all Your promises.

May I yield to your Spirit, Who's changing me into the image of Christ.

Help me to keep my eyes on my Savior and not the storm.

Help me to focus on Christ and not my circumstances.

Help me to look to my Lord and not my lot.

In Christ's Name. Amen

Your Glory in Me

Teach Me To Obey - (Upper Room Sessions) // Bria Jean

You have always been a faithful Father; love has drawn me in as Your child

So I'm trusting You with all of my desires, all of my desires

I'm bowing to Your sovereignty; I'm trusting You are guiding me

And when my failing flesh is tempting me to stray, oh teach me, teach me to obey

You will not forget a single promise; all Your plans are meant for my good

And I will lay my life completely in Your hands, completely in Your hands

I'm bowing to Your sovereignty; I'm trusting You are guiding me

And when my failing flesh is tempting me to stray, oh teach me, teach me to obey

Place in me a heart that sees all you have is good for me

Even when each step is by faith

When the time of testing comes, not my will but Yours be done, even when it calls

for me, to give myself away

I'm bowing to Your sovereignty; I'm trusting You are guiding me

I'm bowing to Your sovereignty; I'm trusting You are guiding me

And when my failing flesh is tempting me to stray, oh teach me, teach me to obey

III. Confession/Exonerate

A.   Confession – v. 5a-c

Pressed and depressed, David could no longer hold the toxic guilt that was dammed up inside of him. With pressure from an accusing conscience within and the pressing conviction of the hand of God without, David finally confessed and repented; guilt then retreated, and God relented.

Ps 32:1-2

1 Blessed is the one whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered

2 Blessed is the man against whom the Lord counts no iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no deceit.

ESV

Ps 32:5

5 I acknowledged my sin to you, and I did not cover my iniquity; I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord,” and you forgave the iniquity of my sin.

                                                            Selah

ESVESV

 Ps 32:3

For when I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long.

Ps 32:4

4 For day and night your hand was heavy upon me; my strength was dried up as by the heat of summer.                       Selah

ESV

When we place verses 1-2 alongside verse 5, we will see how perfectly they serve as bookends. Verses 1-2 display the blessed state of the forgiven. Verses 3-4 plunge us into the life of one who has sinned and failed to confess and repent. Verse 5 pulls us from the depths of despair into the glory found in verses 1-2.

This becomes clear from the table I have included above. The same three words, “transgression,” “sin,” and “iniquity,” used in verses 1-2, are repeated in verse 5 (though not in the same order). These three words used in the first two verses to show the thorough depravity of sin are now employed to demonstrate the all-embracing acknowledgment of sin(s)!

The psalmist returns to the first verse and picks up three nouns: sin, iniquity, transgressions. However, for the purpose of emphasis these words are placed in a different order from their first occurrence in verse 1

(from UBS Old Testament Handbook Series. Copyright © 1978-2004 by United Bible Societies. All rights reserved.)

In the words of confession (v 5), the psalmist uses the same three words that appeared in the wisdom introduction (sin, iniquity, and transgression) to indicate the comprehensiveness of his confession.

Craigie, P. C. (2004). Psalms 1–50 (2nd ed., Vol. 19, p. 267). Nelson Reference & Electronic.

Thus, deceit gives way to honest acknowledgment and confession. David instructs himself (i.e., “I said” v. 5c), demonstrating his confession’s integrity. This is not a fake confession, nor has it been done only to alleviate his extreme discomfort.

Worship in Witness:

Besides highlighting certain words in the table above, I have also underlined several. First, let us look at the ones underlined with two lines. I did this to spotlight the character of genuine confession and repentance. The words “no deceit” at the end of verse 2 illuminate the attitude and motive behind the words “acknowledged” and “confess” in verse 5. There can be no hypocrisy when one confesses their sin(s) to God. Neither is there to be a flippant attitude (OopS! I messed up, sorry) or an excusing mindset (I blew it, Lord, You know I’m not perfect). An attitude of presumption does not enter into the thoughts of the truly repentant (When I confess my sin(s), God has to forgive me. After all, “to err is human, to forgive is divine.”). Authentic confessions are made without guile or deceit. And they humbly rely on the grace and undeserved mercy of God.

Moreover, honest acknowledgment of sin(s) is marked by full disclosure. Notice the words “covered” (v. 1) and “cover” (v. 5) highlighted in red in verse 1 and verse 5. I chose the color red because this word is related to the word used in Hebrew for “atone” or “atonement. To confess with integrity involves completely acknowledging our transgression(s). The human bandages we have applied to cover up our sins cannot be only partially lifted, giving only a glimpse of the festering wound underneath caused by sin. No, they must be completely ripped off so that God can cover and heal them with the blood of His Son, Jesus. We cannot atone for our sins, for God has done that through the sacrifice of Christ on the cross. And we cannot restore lost fellowship with the Lord by works of penance when we sin.

5. Have I not hid] lit. ‘covered,’ as in v. 1. It is only when man does not cover his sin that God does cover it.

You know

There is...

No cave so dark

No ocean so deep

No place so distant

Where I could hide my sin

For...

Darkness is as light to You

Your awareness is unfathomable

Your presence is without measure

I am unable to hide from You, Lord

There is...

No rock so huge

No metal so hard

No weight so heavy

Under which to cover my sin

Because...

Your essence is unboundedly immense

Your Word so irresistibly penetrating

Your arm is unlimited in strength

I am unable to cover my sins

There is...

No corner so secreted

No abode so secluded

No place beyond Your sight

Where I can conceal my sin

Thus...

When I sin, You know it

Before I sinned, You knew it

From eternity, You have known it!

Nothing can be hidden from You.

There is...

No sin performed

No iniquity pursued

No transgression perpetrated

Not covered by the Blood of Christ

Grace, Mercy, and Love

Lord,

Your Grace is everlastingly great

Your Mercy will never abate

Your Love won’t ever dissipate

And by Your grace, I’m securely saved

In Your kingdom, I now abide

By Your mercy, I’m fully forgiven

Of my sin, which I cannot hide

In Love, You restored and redeemed Me

From sin, which in me did reside

For in this life, I’ll surely transgress

There will be times when I regress

My sins, I’ll need to fully confess

And by Your great Grace

I will be rectified.

In Your munificent Mercy

Cleansing will be applied

From the largess of Your Love

Absolution will be supplied

Because Your Grace was free for me

Your Mercy was granted abundantly

Through Love on a Tree at Calvary

~Amen

How blest are we if God the Lord (Psalm 32 by Isaac Watts

HOW blest are we if God the Lord
No more imputes our sin,
But washed in the Redeemer’s blood,
Our garments are made clean.

Happy beyond description, we
Whose debts are thus discharged;
Set from our guilt and bondage free,
We feel our souls enlarged.

While inward guilt remained suppressed
No comfort could we find,
Unease lay burning in the breast
And troubles plagued the mind.

Then we confessed our hidden thoughts,
Those secret sins revealed;
Thy pardoning grace forgave our faults,
And grace our pardon sealed.

How shall we dare delay to pray,
When like a raging flood,
Temptations rise to take away
Our hold from our dear Lord?

Our hiding-place and peace Thou art,
Our strength in Satan’s hour,
The guardian of the faltering heart,
And source of keeping power.

He Disciplines Us For Our Good

Worship in Word:

II. External: the convicting hand of God

A.    Weighted – 4a

“For day and night your hand was heavy on me” (NIV’ 84)

In verse 3, David divulges the internal turmoil he was experiencing from his stubborn unwillingness to confess his sin to the Lord. In verse 4, we discover the ultimate source of his distress.

Certainly, we can ascribe the painful conviction David felt from a conscience (or heart - the term the OT often uses) informed by God’s word and as one described as a man after God’s own heart (1 Sam. 13:14, Acts 13:22). But is that the only or ultimate source? Or is the One who gave humans their conscience the primary source? A conscience that in the beginning was innocent but now is fatally impaired by the sin nature that has completely infected everyone stemming from Adam’s sinful choice in the Garden of Eden.

The topic of conscience is a subject that is too great to get into here. Suffice it to say that verses 3 – 4 point to God’s convicting and sanctifying work in the life of one of His chosen vessels. However, while David is here referring to an experience he went through, we cannot divorce it from the greater context that speaks to all of God’s redeemed.

Secondarily, in principle, we can apply it to the lost sinner who has come under the conviction of the Holy Spirit and responds with “godly sorrow.” The Apostle Paul speaks about such grief:

Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death. 2 Cor. 7:10

B.    Withering – 4b

“my strength was sapped as in the heat of summer.”

The convicting hand of God pressing down on David had a withering effect on him. He describes it vividly, likening it to the strength-sapping sun beating down on a person exposed to its merciless and relentless heat and arid effects. However, unlike the searing heat of a Middle-East summer, which may lead to delirium and even death if one does not have adequate shelter, protection, or hydration, God’s hand is meant to save, deliver, and restore His people.

For us, His pressing hand is not one of punishment but one of purging.

Brief Notes on God’s Discipline

God’s discipline is:

1)     Personal & Loving – “the Lord disciplines the one He loves” – Hebrews 12:6a NIV (see Proverbs 3:11-12)

2)     Patient & Perfect – “For they disciplined us for a short time based on what seemed good to them” –  Heb 12:10 (HCSB)

a)     Our earthly parent(s) disciplined us for a brief time [until we reached adulthood], but God is in it for the long haul [for our lifetime].

b)     Our earthly parent(s) disciplined us according to what seemed best to them but may not have been best for us. In contrast, by implication, God’s discipline, however, is perfect and wise (and thus for our best -See  below - Hebrews 12:10b)

3)     Purposeful & Purifying – “He does it for our benefit, so that we can share in His holiness.” Hebrews 12:10b HCSB

Therefore:

V  do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord” Heb 12:5a  ESV

Remember:

V  Present discipline is painful but yields the “peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.” Hebrews 12:11b ESV

Worship in Witness:

Here are some thoughts and takeaways I had from Psalm 32:3-4:

Ø Verse 3 reveals the internal struggle going on in David’s soul. Verse 4 explains the external cause – the conviction of God pressing down on an unrepentant heart of one of His children. David was wearying from God’s loving whooping.

Ø The specific sin is not identified. Many speculate that it is referring to the incident of adultery with Bathsheba and the murder of Uriah, her husband. I am glad the particular sin has not been revealed. Knowing the sinful human penchant for comparison, divulging the specifics may lead some to limit the application to the specific sin listed. When comparing their sin to that of David’s, others might respond with something to this effect: “Well, at least my sin isn’t as bad as David’s.” Thus, they are mitigating or even quashing the quilt they feel over their sin.

Ø Commentators differ on whether David is describing actual physical responses in his body to God’s crushing disciplining hand or whether these are metaphorical descriptions of the pain he was experiencing within. To me, it does not matter. Either or both can be true. It is not how it is manifested explicitly in one’s life but how one will respond when one experiences God’s discipline. Will it lead to more silence (v. 3) or confession and supplication (v.5)?

Ø Unconfessed sin will sap our spiritual and perhaps physical strength when we remain silent and unrepentant. Strength returns, and relief comes through confession and repentance. And the joy experienced in verses 1-2 will be ours again.

Ps 32:1-2

Blessed is the one whose transgression is forgiven,

          whose sin is covered.

2 Blessed is the man against whom the Lord counts no iniquity,

and in whose spirit there is no deceit.

          ESV

For My Good

Lord,

Sin surrounded me

I surrendered to its seducing charms

But fleeting pleasure

Gave way to persistent guilt

The Damning desire

Led to deepening depression

As I refused to confess

And my guilt I repress

Your hand was no longer a refuge

But a crushing confine

Selah

Yet this was for my good

To squeeze the pus of sin

From the festering sore within

To restore the joy of my salvation

Your hand so distressing

Became a source of blessing

And from the depths of my soul

Erupted my confession

Bringing healing and relief

Strength and renewed belief

                        SelahAmen

WAIT

Wait... when God stays not His hand.

Though you cannot see or understand

The reason for this trial or comprehend

His goodness in discipline He doth wend

Towards you, His loved and chosen child

Whom He adopted and reconciled.

‘Tis for your good and for His glory

In God’s marvelous unfolding story.

And when we come to the end of life’s run,

Crossing the finish line, a new life has begun.

So don’t walk away when you don’t know why.

Your Father knows the best discipline to apply.

Then At Last (Psalm 32) by Wendell Kimbrough.

Blest is the soul that’s free from deceit—

No need to hide what he says from what he means.

Blest is the heart forgiven by love,

Whose every fault our good Lord covers up.

Long I disguised and buried my shame;

Ran through the night and I groaned through the day.

Shelter I sought where I thought I was safe,

But oh silent soul, how you wasted away!

Then at last I told all my sins,

And with shouts of joy, lovin’ arms drew me in

To my one true safe place:

In the love of God and the family of grace!

So listen up, if you truly want to live:

Do not hide alone in the dark like this one fool did.

Be not like the mule as he fights against the reins.

Come let your broken heart be bound by grace!
