"God's People Need Lifting Up"

March 9, 2016
Worship:
Psalm 25 Part 1
 v.1–11
Meter: S. M.
Waiting for pardon and direction.
I Lift my soul to God,
My trust is in his name:
Let not my foes that seek my blood
Still triumph in my shame.
Sin, and the powers of hell,
Persuade me to despair:
Lord, make me know thy cov’nant well,
That I may ’scape the snare.
From the first dawning light
Till the dark ev’ning rise,
For thy salvation, Lord, I wait
With ever-longing eyes.
Remember all thy grace,
And lead me in thy truth;
Forgive the sins of riper days,
And follies of my youth.
The Lord is just and kind,
The meek shall learn his ways,
And every humble sinner find
The methods of his grace.
For his own goodness’ sake
He saves my soul from shame:
He pardons, though my guilt be great,
Through my Redeemer’s name.1

Psalm 25

LORD, to You My Soul Is Lifted

LORD, to you my soul is lifted.
Let me never be ashamed.
Look at me in your forgiveness
for the honor of your name.
Guard my soul and rescue me;
on your path I humbly follow.
Save me from my enemies;
see me, feel my pain and sorrow.
Turn to me in grace and mercy
as I suffer all alone.
Take away my sin and sadness,
all the trouble I have known.
You alone are fair and just;
you will honor and protect me.
In your goodness I will trust.
On your people, LORD, have mercy.

Witness:
Time flies by and it is 2:04 am Wednesday morning. I have struggled with rest and keeping my spirits up. The failure to connect with my wife on Monday and the subsequent virtual silence on her part has caused a deep wound in my soul. I cannot deny this nor should I. I cannot experience true healing and deliverance from God if I suppress the truth and lie to myself. It also reveals the hidden pride that dwelled inside of me. Was I giving lip service to the Lord concerning my reliance on His strength? So, this “setback”, as I saw it, was really God’s chastising Love towards me.
My son, do not despise the Lord's discipline
and do not resent his rebuke,
because the Lord disciplines those he loves,
as a father the son he delights in.
Prov 3:11-12 NIV

Therefore, I lift my wounded soul to my God. I confess my pride and receive my Heavenly Father’s loving discipline.
In Him, I put my trust. In Him, I hope. In Him, I have received forgiveness through the blood of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

NASU

I have camped out on this verse for several days now. It is a pivotal declaration in the life of the believer. It should be, but rarely is, the daily cry of the believer from the very inception of the faith in Christ. I share a devotional from Spurgeon and will expand further into the Psalm on Friday, two days from now. Band of Brothers meets tomorrow night and I need to prepare for it today and tomorrow.

"Lift them up for ever."
— Ps 28:9

God's people need lifting up. They are very heavy by nature. They have no wings, or, if they have, they are like the dove of old which lay among the pots; and they need divine grace to make them mount on wings covered with silver, and with feathers of yellow gold. By nature sparks fly upward, but the sinful souls of men fall downward. O Lord, "lift them up for ever!" David himself said, "Unto Thee, O God, do I lift up my soul," and he here feels the necessity that other men's souls should be lifted up as well as his own. When you ask this blessing for yourself, forget not to seek it for others also. There are three ways in which God's people require to be lifted up. They require to be elevated in character. Lift them up, O Lord; do not suffer Thy people to be like the world's people! The world lieth in the wicked one; lift them out of it! The world's people are looking after silver and gold, seeking their own pleasures, and the gratification of their lusts; but, Lord, lift Thy people up above all this; keep them from being "muck-rakers," as John Bunyan calls the man who was always scraping after gold! Set thou their hearts upon their risen Lord and the heavenly heritage! Moreover, believers need to be prospered in conflict. In the battle, if they seem to fall, O Lord, be pleased to give them the victory. If the foot of the foe be upon their necks for a moment, help them to grasp the sword of the Spirit, and eventually to win the battle. Lord, lift up Thy children's spirits in the day of conflict; let them not sit in the dust, mourning for ever. Suffer not the adversary to vex them sore, and make them fret; but if they have been, like Hannah, persecuted, let them sing of the mercy of a delivering God.

We may also ask our Lord to lift them up at the last! Lift them up by taking them home, lift their bodies from the tomb, and raise their souls to Thine eternal kingdom in glory.
