Actions Reveal Truth

May 9,2016

Worship: Disappear by Bebo Norman

On a day like this
I want to crawl beneath a rock
A million miles from the world
The noise, the commotion
That never seems to stop

And on a day like this
I want to run away from the routine
Run away from the daily grind
That can suck the life, right out of me
I only know one place I can run to

I want to hide in You
The way, the life, the truth so I can disappear
And love is all there is to see coming out of me
And You become clear as I disappear

I don’t want to care about earthly things
Be caught up in all the lies that trick my eyes
They say it’s all about me
I’m so tired of it being about me

I want to hide in You
The way, the life, the truth and I can disappear
And love is all there is to see coming out of me
And You become clear as I disappear

I would rather be cast away
Separated from the human race
If I don’t bring You glory
If I don’t bring You glory
If I don’t bring You glory

'Cause I want to hide in You
The way, the life, the truth and I can disappear
And love is all there is to see coming out of me
And You become clear as I disappear

Witness:

I don’t have much to say today. Melancholy pursued me from the time I woke up until now. Cleaning the house brought me in contact with old birthday cards from my wife and the pictures on the wall with all of us as a family when the kids were young. I also received a birthday card from her. It was a humorous one about officially becoming a member of the old man club. In other times, I might have doubled over in laughter, but the fact that she was not here and the card was not a “husband” card but an “anyone” card added to my melancholic state. The one bright moment in my day was when I heard the song sung above earlier today. The beginning of the song described my emotional state at the moment though the song was not really addressing melancholy, but the clamor we face in life sometimes. However, I felt its power anyway, drawing me to a safe place with my Lord. To a place where He would increase, and I would decrease. Where my temporary light affliction would somehow bring glory to my God. I know it is conforming me to the image of my Savior and bringing eternal glory.

For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. 2 Cor 4:17 NIV

And so, I must change my outlook:

So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal. 2 Cor 4:18 NIV

Lord ever give me the faith and endurance and the hope I need to weather the melancholic storms that will undoubtedly occur from time to time in my life as it is. Amen

ESV

I. Remember Who You Are (v. 6)
II. Don’t Remember Who I Was or Am (v. 7a)
III. Remember Me in light of Who You Are (v. 7b)

After some thought concerning my little outline in which I struggled with whether it captured the feeling and flow of the prayer, I finally settled on the present form. I realize I wrote it entirely in ontological terms, even though David wrote verse 6 through the first part of 7 in existential terms. Yet behind all that God and David have done, is who God and David really are. Thus, the decision to outline the prayer this way. Our actions flow out of who we are and reveal who we are to ourselves and others. So, it is with God, how He acts tells us who He really is.
