The LORD Thunders! But Are We Listening?

June 1, 2019

Worship in WORD:

  Psalm 29               A psalm of David.

29 Ascribe to the Lord, O mighty ones,
ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.
2 Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name;
worship the Lord in the splendor of his holiness.
3 The voice of the Lord is over the waters;
the God of glory thunders,
the Lord thunders over the mighty waters.
4 The voice of the Lord is powerful;
the voice of the Lord is majestic.
5 The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars;
the Lord breaks in pieces the cedars of Lebanon.
6 He makes Lebanon skip like a calf,
Sirion like a young wild ox.
7 The voice of the Lord strikes
with flashes of lightning.
8 The voice of the Lord shakes the desert;
the Lord shakes the Desert of Kadesh.
9 The voice of the Lord twists the oaks
and strips the forests bare.
And in his temple all cry, "Glory!"
10 The Lord sits enthroned over the flood;
the Lord is enthroned as King forever.
11 The Lord gives strength to his people;
the Lord blesses his people with peace.

I’ve had great difficulty beginning the study of this Psalm. Not only because of the vacation that I took last week, but also because of the sheer magnitude of the words used in it. The loftiness of language. The depths one feels in the presence of the One described in Psalm 29. Bebo Norman is singing “I will sing of Your glory, now and forever” even as I write. Such should be our response before our glorious and almighty LORD (Yahweh). Sadly, that often isn’t the case in our “busy” and “hurried” lives (I’m preaching to myself now).
However, our schedules are not the only thing that robs us of our time in the presence of our God. Circumstances also cloud our vision of our majestic and exalted God. Worry saps us of worship.  Doubt dissipates our devotion. Pride prevents us from recognizing the One who is infinitely greater than us.  Indolence becomes a passive form of idolatry.
Psalm 29, and other passages with the same or similar wording is an antidote to the common maladies we face and facilitate in life. However, a facile reading of the Psalm will not rescue us from our self-indulgent and self-centered lives. It is further complicated by the fact that we live in a scientific world, and David’s was pre-scientific. Therefore, we are prone to dismiss the references to God’s voice speaking through thunder. After all, we know what really causes thunder. But we must remember that God speaks through nature (Ps. 19), and David is speaking metaphorically here in comparing God’s voice to the powerful effect of thunder. Yet we must admit if we are honest,  that thunder can still make us react with fear and awe even today. The question then is, where will we place our “fear?” In the rumble of nature, or the revelation of the God over all nature?

Worship in Witness:
I had an example of our distracted lives played out before me last Saturday during my stay with son number three. A parable portrayed that gave me pause as I considered the effect that distractions have on our lives spiritually.
My son had put on the video, “God is Not Dead 2.” I watched it from start to finish without any interruption. However, as I watched, I became increasingly aware that I was the only one watching. My daughter and grandchildren were all in the same room, but they were not giving any attention to the drama being acted out on the TV screen. Instead, their attentions were all focused on tiny screens from their cell phones held in their hands. Some were playing games. Another was drawing pictures or watching animated videos. Another was texting and perusing Facebook. Now it is not my place to judge the importance or necessity of what they were doing. Yet it seemed to me that this is a picture of many of our days wasted on the unimportant rather than desiring to be inspired and motivated to be in the presence of our great and awesome Lord.
We may believe God is alive and active in the world. Yet the way we live our lives and the way we use our time may give the message “God Is Dead!” to others around us. Speaking metaphorically and ironically:
We must die to self if God is going to be alive to us!

Worship in Song: The Only Hope by Bebo Norman

I want to run, it's my nature to run
And I want to fight, it's my nature to fight
And I want to live, but you tell me to die
I have resolved that I'm much better off
In your hands than mine

I'm begging you to hold on tight
Begging you to hold on tight
Begging you to take my life from me

I want a crumb, but you are a feast
I want a song, but you are a symphony
I want a star, but you’re a galaxy

And I have resolved that I'm much better off
In what you have for me
I'm begging you to hold on tight
Begging you to hold on tight
Begging you to take my life from me

So tell me you won't let go
Tell me you won't let go
Cause you are the only hope for me

Take my life from me, It's the only hope for me
Take my life from me, It's the only hope for me
And I'll never want for more
I'll never want for more

I'm begging you to hold on tight
Begging you to hold on tight
Begging you to take my life from me

So tell me you won't let go
Tell me you won't let go
Cause you’re the only hope for me
Yeah, you’re the only hope for me
You're the only hope for me
