II. Conviction/ Lament/Languish – vv. 3-4
In verses 3-4, David vividly recounts a time in
his life when the weight of sin nearly crushed him.
It is clear from this passage that David felt pressured both
internally and externally. Guilt over his transgression(s) was expanding within
and found no release (“when I kept silent” v. 3 NIV). Shut up inside himself, silent
and unrepentant, David’s guilt still found a way to manifest itself. Though confession
was not uttered, loud groans still escaped his lips (“roaring” v. 3  KJV).
Along with David’s internal suffering displayed in verses
3-4, we see another source involved – the crushing weight of the “hand” of God
upon David’s soul “Your hand was heavy upon me” v. 4 HSCB). The loving hand of
God was unrelentingly disciplining a straying child (“Day and night Your hand
was heavy upon me.” v. 4 HSCB).
I have
broken down verses 3-4 into this simple outline:
I. Internal: the guilt of unconfessed
sin
A. Wasting – 3a
B. Wailing – 3b
II. External: the convicting hand of
God
A. Weightedness – 4a
B. Withering – 4b
With this introduction to verses 3-4, I plan to follow this
outline as I consider each of these verses individually and perhaps by each
subpoint if necessary.
Worship in Witness:
“This little
light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine...”
“Hide it
under a bushel; no, I’m gonna let it shine...”
Many recognize these words are from a beloved hymn many of us
sang as a child in Sunday School. We realize that these words are based on the
words of our Lord found in the Sermon on the Mount.
"You are
the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. 15
Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on
its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the
same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds
and praise your Father in heaven.
Matt 5:14-16
NIV
But what if we changed the word “light” in the song to the
word “sin?” Ah, then our attitude would be much different, wouldn’t it? What
believer would want to boast, “This little sin of mine, I’m gonna let it shine 1?” The second line
quoted above would likely read, “Hide it under a bushel, yes!” Often, our first
response to sinning is not confession but concealment. Is that not David’s first
response, as demonstrated by his revealing testimony in verses 3-4?
Another verse in the song says, “Won’t let Satan blow it out, I’m gonna
let it shine.” I firmly believe that the Devil cannot blow out the light of
God’s people. However, our sin can surely “hide” the light and prevent the praise
our light brings to our Heavenly Father.
1Actually using the word “shine” with reference to sin would
be an oxymoron.
These two words stand in contradiction to each other. Sin in the New Testament
is equated with “deeds of darkness” (see Rom.
13:12-14; see also Eph.
5:8-11, 1
John 1:5-7).

Let My Life Be a Reflection
Lord,
When the light of my good
deeds
Is blotted out by sin
Please pull out these evil
weeds
By the roots from within
And when I sweep sin under
the rug
To hide the dust of my
transgression
May I feel the pull of Your
Spirit’s tug
Leading to confession
Oh, let my life be a
reflection
Of Your light that dwells in
me
Let sin not be that
deflection
Of the praise that belongs
to thee
~ Amen
God of
Light and God of Glory
The
overwhelming darkness
In
the middle of my night
Is
shattered by the presence
Of Your all surrounding light
The
darkness of discouragement
Which
shadows my every day
Dissolves in joyful gladness
When
Your glory’s on display
The
haunting tune of discord
That
fills my aching soul
Becomes
a beautiful melody
When
Your Spirit’s in control
God
of light and God of glory
Sing
Your Song through me
And
let me gladly disappear
So
Christ is who they see
Confession
Song by Paul Hoover
Lord,
I fail you.
How
often, Lord, I fail you.
How
often, Lord, my sin intrudes
on
my fellowship with you.
I
confess, Lord.
In
sorrow, I confess, Lord.
Mindful
of how much I fall short
of
your righteous holiness.
For
you are true perfection
And
I do not deserve your mercy.
For
sin, you do despise Lord.
And
it wells up inside of my heart!
My
one and only hope;
My
plea and my defense
Is
your Son's atoning death!
He
gave me life
With
his last breath,
And
when you look on me
You
see his righteousness.
Take
my sin, Lord.
Renew
me from within, Lord.
Help
me turn from things
that
grieve your heart
and
delight in you alone!
I
repent, Lord.
I
mourn my sin
and
I repent, Lord.
Change
my heart and
Change
my ways, Lord
So,
I learn to walk in light.
For
in my weakness
I
cannot defeat sin alone or triumph.
But
in my weakness, you are strong;
Your
Spirit resides within me.
And
I'm forgiven!
Yes, I'm forgiven!
When
I'm faithful to confess
Lord,
you are faithful to forgive!
