Witness:
I sang this song growing up. My parents were Episcopalians and so my childhood and teen years were spent in an Episcopal Church about every Sunday. I was an acolyte and a crucifer (the one who leads during the processional and carries the cross) during my tween and teen years. It was a very formal setting, and in the church I attended, the Gospels were read, but the gospel was not preached. I am grateful though for learning this song for it was a part of every service. Unfortunately, the song was sung immediately after the offering was taken. The offering was brought forward and given to the priest, who lifted it above his head as an offering to God. The song then became associated only with money and not all the blessings that God gives. In some ways, it also took the focus off God and put it on the money in my youthful mind.
I now praise God from whom all blessings flow, including the sending of one of His missionaries to share the gospel, the good news of salvation by grace through faith in my Savior Jesus Christ the Lord. That missionary was a young neighborhood boy who used to come with me on my paper route. He was in fifth grade and I was in eighth grade.
WORD:
|
Ps 23:5-6 5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. 6 Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. NIV |
Ps 23:5-6 5 Thou prepares a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. 6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever. KJV |
“You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.” Words associated with blessing, especially the latter phrase. When we receive an abundance of something, we are prone to say “my cup runneth over” (we get a little King Jamesy J). I cannot help but see a connection with verse six in reference to this phrase. As with a lot of phrases or verses of the Bible, we tend to quote them divorced from their original context. This is not necessarily completely wrong since we don’t want to limit their power to only one thing unless such a thing is called for by the context. Never-the-less, joining this phrase with what follows in verse six enhances the impact of what we read in verse six. How does “my cup overflow”? This is seen in the personification of goodness and love, which are seen as two who follow me. It is also seen in the privilege of residing in the house of the Lord. These blessing truly are overflowing as seen in the words “all the days of my life” and “forever”. Therefore, I will continually praise my God and Shepherd and Savior “from whom all blessings flow”. I will “praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost”. To which all the truly redeemed say…

Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel,
from everlasting to everlasting.
Then all the people said “Amen” and “Praise the Lord.”

be to our God for ever and ever.
Amen!”
